Why do south americans call the USA "united states" when mexico officially is the "United States of Mexico" ?
Q. Why do south americans call the USA "united states" when mexico officially is the "United States of Mexico" People in south america get upset when people use the word america to only mean the united states of america. Yet they call the united states of america "the united states" even though Mexico also uses that word in its official name... Officially Mexico is "the United States of Mexico" Oh, the hypocrisy ... My point is that there is no reason to get offended when people from the USA call themselves americans. Everyone knows that america is a continent AND the nationality of people from the USA. Now that you've edited your question, it's easier to understand the point you're trying to make. I agree that there really is no reason to get upset over the "American" issue. I think part of it is that back in the day, when people from across the water were emigrating to the U.S., they coined the term, "going to America," when their aim was to make it to Ellis Island. I don't think it ever bothered anyone too much until recently. As a side note, my line of work has taken me to many countries, all the way from Alaska to Argentina, and in almost every country I've been to, when filling out… [cont.]

A. New York Times Co. v. United States, 403 U.S. 713 (1971), was a United States Supreme Court per curiam decision. The ruling made it possible for the New York Times and Washington Post newspapers to publish the then-classified Pentagon Papers without risk of government censure. President Richard Nixon had claimed executive authority to force the Times to suspend publication of classified information in its possession. The question before the court was whether the constitutional freedom of the press under the First Amendment was subordinate to a claimed Executive need to maintain the secrecy of information. The Supreme Court ruled that First Amendment did protect the New York Times' right to print said materials

Instructions for Form 1040-ES for 2008, "What's New" page 2, states "Capital Gain tax rate reduced."
Q. continuing from above, the instructions state, "The 5% capital gain rate is reduced to zero." what does this mean???
Asked by Chuck M - Wed Mar 26 16:15:31 2008 - United States - 2 Answers - Comments
A. In 2007, the portion of long term capital gains (LTCG) which would have been in the 15% or less bracket if it were ordinary income was taxed at 5% instead. For 2008, that portion is taxed at 0%. If your entire income including LTCG is in the 15% or below bracket, your LTCG will not be taxed at all for 2008. Remember, for this calculation, the LTCG is considered as the "last dollars" earned. Your other income takes up the lowest bracket, then LTCG is added on. The net is that low income people pay no LTCG.

Should the title to the song "America the Beautiful" be changed to "United States, the Beautiful", to be P.C.?
Q. I seriously don't want this. But within this international community of Responders here on Y!A, I note how that should one use the word "America" in a synonymous way with "United States", there are those from Mexico, Canada, or even South America who take offense, stating they are Americans too. So in an effort to not mislead and in an effort to be more politically correct, I always try to write "U.S." or "USA" if I mean just that country and not all of North America and/or South America. So this begs the question of whether our treasured national songs like "America the Beautiful" should become more politically correct and change the title and lyrics accordingly: "United States,… [cont.]

And even then he'd just noticed it for the first time and after a good five minutes of us joking about calling you all United Statesians it was pretty much forgotten. Quite honestly, people up here don't really care. As a matter of fact we all call the States America often. As far as we're concerned they're synonymous. I'm on your side, political correctness can go way too far sometimes, it's nice to try and get along with people and be polite and all that, but don't go too far. Chetan seems to have dumbed down his work (god knows for what reason as I liked 3 mistakes well enough). I would recommend that you read this book only if you will die if you don't read it...Rest, I guess it's worth the 65 bucks!

Is "ordered removed from the United States" the same as being "in deportation procedures"?
Q. My Green Card will expire soon and I will have to renew it. One of the questions on the form I have to fill out says:"Have you ever been ordered removed from the United States?" I was in "deferred action" before I received my green card but was never in "deportation procedures". Would I have received notice if I had been ordered removed? All this happened a long time ago, but I would remember that. What exactly does "ordered removed" mean?

Can I make a profit auctioning the new George Washington dollar coins missing "In God We Trust" on e Bay?
Q. I know nothing about coins and have never auctioned anything on e Bay before. But according to an Assoicated Press article on March 7, approximately 50,000 of the new GW dollar coins that are missing "In God We Trust" were put in circulation. The article states, "They're going for around $40 to $60 on e Bay now, and they'll probably settle in the $50 range." I'm guessing that an uncirculated bank roll of 25 of these coins would not necessarily contain only coins with the error. In other words, there is no easy way to obtain enough of them to make much of a profit auctioning them. Am I correct?

A. The mint knew there would be so called error coins due to the way they had to set up the edge lettering for today's high speed coinage presses. In that case are they really errors. 50,000 coin errors or not are a lot of coins and if there are actually that many there will be more. It is up to you, but I feel it is dishonest. I have heard though, fools are easy marks. I enjoy my hobby and over the years have done quite well, with out going for the gimmicks that pop up every year. Just my opinion.

A. They are united by the Constitution and a shared federal government. I'm not saying this to be flippant; it is the simple truth. When the Founding Fathers decided to call the new nation the United States of America, it wasn't because they were all real buddy-buddy and got along real great and had a pleasant, friendly feeling. They called it that because they are, literally, united states. By the way, North America is quite different from America/the United States. North America consists of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, so it is understandable why the U.S. is not "united" with North America. People like to be proud of where they come from, at all levels. North America consists of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, so it is understandable why the U.S. is not "united" with North America. People like to be proud of where they come from, at all levels. Even once you get inside states, you will hear people say that their city/town [cont.]

Quotes from "Charting a New Course for Human Rights"?
Q. The following quotes are from 'Charting a New Course for Human Rights" by Elizabeth Borgwardt, and I need to know what they mean. 1) 'After World War I, similar initiatives in international organization had failed to take root because they lacked this 'cultural traction,' or widespread grounding in popular experience" 2) "The crushing impact of the war had reconfigured two of the most enduring constructions of the Enlightenment, the individual and the nation-state" 3) Why did "the effort to bring legal norms to bear on the vast atrocities commited by the European Axis ultimately [fall] short"? 4) "But ideas and institutions that may initially have been designed to safeguard or entrench American power… [cont.]

A. Human rights refer to the "basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled."[1] Examples of rights and freedoms which have come to be commonly thought of as human rights include civil and political rights, such as the right to life and liberty, freedom of expression, and equality before the law; and social, cultural and economic rights, including the right to participate in culture, the right to food, the right to work, and the right to education. All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. Article 1 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)[2]

using Turbo Tax in New York (moved from FL) - how to go with "State Tax" on W-2?
Q. I am a bit confused. I got W-2 from my employer in New York City. First part is: Federal Tax, second part: State Tax. Both tables looks the same with "state" tax columns filled in with monetary values. Now -- when I use Federal Tax part in Turbo Tax -- do I re-type those "state tax" fields as well? If I click on "federal tax" and retype everything whats on my W2 on "federal tax" part, then my State tax goes up to $700. When I remove that part, it goes down to $50. I am confused. Why would W2 in part for "federal tax" contain data for "state tax" -- and do I have to retype it or leave it blank? Thank you! thanks Hazel. I spend 6 months in FL and then moved to NY. yes, I did retype… [cont.]

A. First of all you must make sure you are entering the correct state information. It is what state you paid the tax to...not whenre you live. Also there are some questions asking you if you moved and when during the interview portion. Those questions will determine how much tax you owe. To me it sounds like you lived part of the year in FL and part in NY, right? But according to my info the state of Florida collects no income tax and you are not even required to file a return there. ( No wonder so many retirees like it!) So...just file your state taxes for NY. You do not have to re-type anything. Turbo tax should transfer everything over to your state for you. Best wishes!

Obama's "New World Order" is based on hope, change, & collaboration. Why are Bush conservatives so uneasy?
Q. After reading what Obama wants for the US and its new "role"--I suspect that Obama wants to transform America's image from a militaristic--imperialistic--gambit to a more productive partnership; where the nations of the world can grow and benefit from this nation's new leadership. So why do Bush conservatives feel so threatened and uneasy about the whole idea? They claim that Obama wants to change the US into a Marxist, "nanny-state"--but given what I've read online--I don't see any *hint* of that ever happening. There's no proof or evidence that Obama is turning into a socialist either--not from the way he is behaving. The man is leading by EXAMPLE and getting kudos from every corner of the globe. He is proving himself… [cont.]

A. First off, I reject that Bush was ever president. He made have held the office, but it's apparent to anyone with their eyes and ears open, Cheney was the commander in chief. The politics of the GOP are hopefully dead. As much as they themselves say we are a global society, they still want to be protectionists along with being capitalists. The sad part, they only want to protect those with real wealth, not the rest of us and that is exactly what is being exposed about their party. We need a global effort of cooperation and since the republicans in general can't see past their own capitalistic views no matter how flawed, tough for them. Things are changing better for the masses, how can you expect republicans to accept that fact? Their… [cont.]
